Ten Days for The Firm

Ten days. These are the number of days given to the Asian Shipping Corporation to tow away its barge that has been stuck for three months off Agno town.

The barge was cruising along the South China Sea when the towing hawser connecting it to a tug boat snapped last December 18. It was carrying at least 4.6 metric tons of coal.

Dagupan, a city yearly devastated by floods, has been selected as one of the five Asian project sites for the Program for Hydro-Meteorological Risk Mitigation in Secondary Cities in Asia (Promise) by the United States Agency for International Development.

The Promise, which seeks to reduce the vulnerability of urban communities through enhanced preparedness and mitigation of hydro-meteorological disasters, is to be implemented by the Center for Preparedness Foundation Inc.(CDP) at a cost of $100,000 (P5.2 million) from February 1, 2006- January 31, 2008. dress code

I did not get to watch the 2006 version of the Oscar Awards. In fact, I seldom do watch award shows, but I like reading about what happened during the shows the day after.

As usual, the entertainment pages went to town describing what this and that actor and actress wore during the Academy Awards. The pages are also full of color photos showing the actresses as they walk down the red carpet.

(I’m happy Reese Witherspoon went home with the Best Actress trophy for her role in Walk the Line. I really like her since I watched her in Legally Blonde 1 and 2 and in the movies being shown on cable channels). Read more

coal spill get's board's attention

Finally, the Pangasinan’s provincial board will tackle the coal spill which occurred more than two months ago in the western Pangasinan town of Agno.

Nick Melecio, a consultant on the provincial government, told me that he had asked Provincial Board Member Alice Pulido to conduct a legislative inquiry into the matter. Then I received a text message from Lydia Colobong saying the inquiry will be held on March 10, Friday, at the Capitol in Lingayen.

Manong Nick told me that coal have affected about half of the coastal area of sitio Talisay in Macaboboni village. Read more

The Peso, the Dollar and the OFW

Almost daily, the papers’ business section reports on how the Poor Philippine Peso is doing vis-à-vis the Almighty American Dollar. Whether it goes up or down, it’s news. It’s the same story – only the words are rearranged and the quotes a little different.

If the peso plunges, the government quickly blames the “destabilizers.” If it skyrockets, of course, the government also is also quick to claim the credit.

As of today, the Philippine Peso is about 51 to the American Dollar. The government is rejoicing, saying it had to pay less for the foreign debts and that more money goes to projects that will benefit more people. Read more

Will the national leadership dare to pick Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz and three other bishops and put them into detention?

The outspoken Archbishop who has something to say about anything and everything under the sun, has received information that Malacañang was out to get him and the other  bishops.  They will be picked up anytime by police authorities then charged for machinating to overthrow the present Administration, Cruz claimed.
