Is it time to rejoice?

Yeah, so President Gloria Arroyo lifted the state of emergency exactly a week after she decided that the country was suffering from an an emergency case which needed extraordinary measures to contain.

The Peso, the Dollar and the OFW

Almost daily, the papers’ business section reports on how the Poor Philippine Peso is doing vis-à-vis the Almighty American Dollar. Whether it goes up or down, it’s news. It’s the same story – only the words are rearranged and the quotes a little different.

If the peso plunges, the government quickly blames the “destabilizers.” If it skyrockets, of course, the government also is also quick to claim the credit.

As of today, the Philippine Peso is about 51 to the American Dollar. The government is rejoicing, saying it had to pay less for the foreign debts and that more money goes to projects that will benefit more people. Read more
