To kill a (quail) bird
I felt so bad after reading a report about the vice president of the United States of American accidentally shooting a friend during a hunting spree.
The report was carried by the Philippine Daily Inquirer on February 16 and it said the incident occurred “on Saturday.” So the hunting must have taken place on February 11, a weekend day, a nice day to “relax.”
The report said Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip at ranch in a Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with a shotgun pellets.
The “victim” was no ordinary person as he is “millionaire attorney” Harry Whittington from Austin. Thankfully, he survived the accidental shooting and was reportedly doing well in a hospital.
What’s so uncomfortable about the report is that there have been no violent reactions nor protests that arose from whatever sector usually reacts when such incidents occur.
If the victim were a poor man, perhaps a ranch worker or one from lower echelons of society, there could have been protests or rallies already being held.
But the victim’s a rich guy. He needed no protection from “lobby groups.” And he’s a rich guy who was at the place where he wanted to be. And he was there to enjoy what perhaps he enjoy doing most – hunting quails. And he could have his face fixed.
But whose raising a howl for the quails? Those little birds are raised in the Philippines for their spotted little eggs.
Those little birds were being hunted at the Texas ranch by a top political official and a rich guy just for the heck of it. I doubt if they needed the quail meat. The birds are really small (about five inches, according to a web site) and must offer very little meat.
Some human beings do get a high from killing animals. Some love cockfights, dog fights, toro (toro is human vs. animal but it’s really the human who provoke the toro and most often, it’s the toro that dies), spider fights. There boxing of course, which pits a human vs. human. But that’s for another blog.
Hunting is one hobby which I can say is very cruel to animals such as birds, those peaceful creatures of the air. They fly over fields and marshlands where they think they are safe, then out of the blue, a shot from a hunter fell them down.
I am but a small voice, but I hope there will come a time when hunting is banned and the birds can fly far and free.
